Shift happens

Does shifting your bike throw you into the frustration of rattling chains, missed gears, and difficult pedaling? Do you find yourself walking up hills because your bike’s gears won’t shift?

There’s no time like the present to get a grip on shifting.

Feeling Good About Where You Are.

This morning I biked to the university for some exercise and a reminder that my body likes to be used in this way on sunny days. Yes, sometimes I forget that my body likes to move and stretch and grow stronger with each use.

As I began the ascent up one of many hills, pedaling in a high gear that was wearing me out, I finally appreciated what I’d learned about quantum leaps and human achievement.

This is a really basic idea, which is why it applies to many situations:

Quantum leaps are possible, but they’re not easily sustained.

Gradual becoming is more fun, feels better and is sustainable in the long term.

In cycling terms: When you’re going up a hill, shift down to the easiest gear that makes sense for the incline and your rate of motion. Once you pick up speed, then shift to the next highest gear. When you’re pedaling faster on a flatter surface, take it up another notch into a gear where the momentum from your previous effort carries you along into the next transition, so you leverage your work and move faster with minimal effort.

Not at all brilliant! But I’ve seen so many people working too hard by trying to pedal in the wrong gear. Either too high and tiring themselves out, or too low and missing out on taking advantage of momentum.

In life terms: Do what feels right, right now.

Quantum leaps of Being seem rare; not many people go directly from feeling frustrated about something to feeling wonderful about it…. UNLESS they change at root level how they think about life. (Think spontaneous remissions and people healing themselves by making a drastic shift in their values and how they relate to the world.)

How to Feel Better?

You only feel good when you’re thinking about something that feels better. How many times have you heard that even when life sucks, ask, “What about this could be good for me right now, if I had to find something to be grateful for right now?” Well, as lame as this is, it works too, if you are in the mood to humour the questioner. Why does it work? Because your vibration is all that matters.

What you focus on, expands…

When you’re thinking about something that feels better, or focusing your attention on feeling appreciation, more of the same will come to you. While you’re doing something you enjoy, you are relaxed and feeling no resistance to getting what you want.

Your beliefs are just thoughts you keep thinking so keep thinking about things in a way that promotes that feeling of positive expectation in you. Do anything to keep your mind on want you WANT to have happen, and hold the image or movie in your mind. See the colours, feel the air, smell the scents, feel the experience you envision; just make sure that as you think of living what you envision happening for yourself, that you feel good and know that you can be, do, and have it.

Feeling Bad Feels Good Later

But sometimes it feels good to feel craptacular. Experiencing what you don’t want, makes knowing what you do want, extremely clear. I have some friends who grew up in restrictive environments with little freedom and not a lot of money; today, they are among the most motivated and driven people I know. They are very clear about what they want.

You know this, I know.

Now for the analogy that I have been hitting you over the head with, sorry: Reaching for the next gear [feeling] that feels better is a core process of feeling great. This is also common sense: do the next thing that is within your reach that brings you closer to your goal.

What to do now:

Find something to feel good about. Anything. In that trippy metaphysical way: you’re already where you want to be and yet you don’t realize [make real] it until you feel it. Feel like you’re where you want to be, moving progressively closer one thought at a time.

Isn’t it a hoot?
Of all the people in all the world who actually “get it”, few, if any, actually give it to themselves.

The trick? Baby steps.

Give, just a little, today. Give credit, give praise, give goodies, to yourself, and the Universe will
give you even more.

Selfishness is a virtue, unless you think it must come at the expense of others. And why would anyone think that? Oh yeah, that’s what all the people who don’t get it told you. - [Get Your Note from the Universe Here (I have this site bookmarked...)]
